I happened to visit Kosaka mining office and Vestige of
Matuo mine. Both places are related mining. But histories of them are
definitely different.
The Kosaka mining office (photo 1-3) in Akita prefecture was built in 1905
when the Kosaka copper mining was in its best, and had been used as a
office until 1999. The office was decomposed and rebuilt to refine as a
new office in 2001.
The old theater Kohrakukan (photo4-6)was built as a recreation facility
for Kosaka mining in 1910, Kabuki play and some amusement shows are still
performed there. This theater is designated to one of the important
cultural assets in Japan.
The Vestige of matuo mine (photo7-12) is in the Hachimantai national park
at the altitude 1000meters. This mine had prospered as the biggest sulfur
mine in Asia. But this mine was closed in 1972, and apartment houses,
school and other facilities were abandoned and remained as a ruined town.
